Type Style Finder

Type that is classified as archaic in the Western tradition harks back to the

simple, lapidary (stone-carved) forms derived initially from Sumerian

cuneiform—sharp, angular, and chiseled strokes—and later refined by the

Greeks and Romans. All-capital faces dominate this category, as these

forms were the first to be developed. Simple construction, geometrically

circular curves, abrupt junctures, and quadrant-based proportions in

width—in which the O, A, H, and N define a square, supported by letters

with half-square widths, such as E, F, L, S, B, and R—join with brush or

pen-inspired strokes. Faces that reference older forms tend to be uniform

in overall weight, while those that evoke the refined culture of Rome show

contrast among the strokes. Archaic typefaces may have serifs—evidence

of the chisel and the brush as drawing method—or may not. Single-weight

script forms—sometimes clearly hand drawn—allude to casual writing

from the era. Geometric glyphlike alphabets round out the category. Modern

interpretations of archaic forms sometimes include lowercase forms,

integrating the past with present needs for text.
