Not many readers will recognise Cardiff's Empire Pool. Opened in 1958 and demolished to make way for Wales' Rugby mecca, the Millennium Stadium in 1998, it was the only Olympic‐size pool in the country. Fifty metres (164 feet) from end to end, with five diving boards. Oh, those diving boards! One‐ and three‐metre (3‐ and 10‐foot) springy boards. Then came the platforms. The third board was 5 metres (16 feet) up, the fourth would take you to 7.5 metres (24.6 feet), and the board of all boards was, of course, Top board. Never referred to as the fifth board, always simply known as “Top!” ...
