9Leveraging Your Résumé

THE MOST IMPORTANT thing you can do in a job search, next to actually getting a job, is to get job interviews. No matter how good your résumé might be, unless it helps you get face-to-face interviews with hiring managers—that is, the hiring authorities who are feeling the “pain” (the urgent need to hire someone), your efforts are wasted.

Getting interviews is hard work. It requires tenacity, persistence, determination, and courage to thrust yourself upon people, even if that doesn’t come naturally for you. Most people are not comfortable convincing others to interview them, even when there’s the possibility of being hired. It can be a daunting, burdensome, and excruciating task.
