Karine had set up my next meeting with Eric Concord. She also chose where we were to meet: the newly opened 96th Street Second Avenue Subway stop. The morning of the meeting, I decided to have another heart-to-heart conversation with her.
“You've done very well, Scott. Concord is extremely impressed with you.”
“Thanks. Wouldn't have done it without you. I appreciated the very gentle nudge, by the way.” She laughed. “And yes, I remember our deal. As soon as I see Nowell next, I'll set something up with him.”
“Oh, no need to make that effort,” she said, confusing me a bit. “I've already set up dinner for the two of you at Las Puertas.” You'll find it on your schedule. I know that Nowell likes that place as well.”
“That's either extremely efficient or extremely pushy,” I laughed. “Either way, thanks. Can I ask you a question?” I waved her over to the window. “Please look out here with me and tell me what you see.”
Karine looked up and down and absorbed the scene before responding. “I see a world. A world of opportunity.”
“If you don't mind, I'm curious; what do you think about when I say the word awareness?”
“Scott, what's gotten into you?”
“What do you mean?”
“Something's different about you. I'm not exactly sure what it is, but it's there for sure, and …” she paused for a moment, looking closely at me, “I like it.”
“Well, I don't feel very different, but I don't feel the same, either.”
“That's what I mean. You seem more … open, if that's the right word.” She paused again. ...
