I neared the third portal and felt the snugness of the Springsteen tee shirt against my chest as I moved. I was amazed at how these dreams sometimes felt more realistic than my waking state. The third portal was now lit up like the first two, and I entered it with an open mind.

I was transported to a classroom in which the chairs were arranged in semicircles facing the front. I chose an empty seat in the back row and slipped into it from the side, as it was the kind with a desk attached to it. The chair brought back memories of my school days, and I wondered briefly how many pieces of gum were stuck to its underside.

I turned my attention to the others in the room as I tried to figure out where I was. The teacher's back was to the class; he was writing something I couldn't see on the whiteboard on the wall.

The casually dressed students looked to be about ten years old. A chart on one of the closet doors entitled “Class 5-3 Rules” confirmed that I was in a fifth-grade classroom. As I continued observing, now looking for clues as to why I was here, the teacher turned back to us, revealing the word “Knowing” on the whiteboard. I was in the Portal of Knowing. I took a closer look at the teacher and it was unmistakably the beggar, but he looked a little like Larry. When he spoke, he sounded a little like Larry as well.

“Today we are continuing our exploration of some of the mysteries of the universe.”

The students stirred in anticipation. Seemed like heavy stuff for a fifth-grade ...
