Our Memory Systems

Memory and the Brain

Memories form a core part of all of our experiences. What do you think of when you read the word “dog”? At the mere mention of the word, we’ve just primed you to think dog-related thoughts. Images of dogs may spontaneously pop into mind. You may think about your own dogs, a common breed, or perhaps the Taco Bell Chihuahua. If we were in a memory lab, we could reliably demonstrate that you would now be faster to produce dog-associated words such as “cat,” “bone,” and “collar.” All of these associations leap to mind at the mere introduction of the term. In other words, we are biased toward certain thoughts based on our past experiences.
