Rapport is the door to any relationship – if it cannot be opened and kept open then the relationship just fails to flourish. It also has a role to play in adversarial situations such as a negotiation and is certainly essential if you wish to persuade someone to your point of view.

In everyday language rapport is about getting ‘in sync’ with another person; it is ensuring that the other person feels comfortable in your presence and not in any way threatened. Rapport is the beginning of trust between two people and needs to be maintained for the duration of the relationship – this is sometimes known as ‘personal unfolding’. ...
