In being assertive the basic principle is to make yourself as visible as possible. By the way they hold themselves people gives away a tremendous amount of information about themselves which can even include an indication of their disposition.

If you are going to be assertive you have to look calm, confident and deliberate. If you have difficulties doing this, remember that no one can see how anxious you are inside your head.
