Supporting Software
Regardless of whether or not pictures emerge from the camera in a perfect state, and therefore whether or not image editing software is necessary to improve picture quality, there are some other aspects of digital photography that will always benefit from the judicious use of third-party software. Potentially these programs are even more important than image editing programs but inevitably it is more tempting to prioritize buying software that allows you to play around with pictures rather than investing time and money in programs for less glamorous purposes, such as being able to find specific pictures in years to come when your collection has grown to many thousands of images.
