Many consulting or practice documents refer to engagement by describing the costs of disengaged employees to industry. However, none of these popular writings describes or defines what disengagement is or what unengaged workers look like or do. Their focus is on engagement as an outcome (Wefald & Downey, 2009), which they define as the opposite of disengagement.
