Grasping the ideas within an entire book is challenging, especially if one only reads a few chapters here and there. In this chapter, I summarize the general ideas and contributions of the book and offer perspectives on next steps in the employee engagement landscape.

The Current State of the Field

In Parts I and II of the book, I reviewed where we are today with understanding employee engagement. Current, dominant, definitions of engagement (e.g., Kahn, 1990; Macey & Schneider, 2008; Schaufeli, Salanova, González-Romá, & Bakker, 2002) suggest engaged employees:
