Preface

The purpose of this book is to understand the nature of culture so that we can deal with unfamiliar cultural practices when we encounter people from different cultural backgrounds. The way in which we present ourselves culturally and deal with unfamiliar cultural realities is complex. It is partly to do with a describable difference between nations, but it also has a lot to do with how all of us negotiate the cultural realities of everyday life in very similar ways. This book concentrates on these shared cultural skills. The knowledge of how they operate helps us understand and engage with cultural behaviour wherever we find it.
