XML

XML is a big topic; too big for this book, really. But it is important enough — and useful enough — to deserve a brief description. The term, XML, stands for extensible Markup Language and this can mean a lot of things. A close relative of XML is HTML (HyperText Markup Language) which is familiar to many people. HTML is used to format Web pages. It uses a pre-determined set of “tags” to specify formatting options for the text, images, and controls that make up Web pages. The following snippet of HTML includes formatting tags to center text on the page and make the text display as bold:
