Introduction

‘They couldn't organize a booze-up in a brewery’ is typical of the derogatory comments that are made frequently about unsuccessful activity in every walk of life – from sport to politics, and from high-level business to the local horticultural society or social club.

The signs of disorganization are easy enough to recognize – people rushing around, often working very hard individually, but achieving little collectively.

If, then, the signs of disorganization are obvious to anyone, what should you observe when an organization is ‘well run’?
