The Mechanisms to Coordinate
To make a movie or score a goal, people doing different things have to work together. This is called coordination, and it is the essence of organizing, following the division of labor.
The division of labor is pretty straightforward, dictated by the mission of the organization and the technology it uses. To make a film, you need writers, actors, camera crew, directors, and so on. To play hockey, you need forwards, defense, a goalie, and coaches to guide them. Each player in a film or a game knows what to do, but to put all their work together—to coordinate it—is another matter.
