Our purpose in this chapter is to discuss some recent legislation and directives that pertain to electronic signatures, to clarify some terminology associated with various forms of electronic signatures, and to place digital signatures into context. We will also highlight some of the requirements and obligations that may apply to Certification Authorities (CAs), subscribers, and relying parties. Before proceeding with this chapter, we would like to point out that we are not attorneys and we are in no way attempting to offer legal advice in this chapter.
