Chapter 24. Deployment Issues and Decisions

The purpose of this chapter is to briefly discuss many of the issues an organization needs to consider before launching a PKI deployment. Most of these issues will also help an organization determine the best technology vendor (or service organization) available to meet its needs. As with most of Part III, the primary focus is on the enterprise PKI. Some enterprise issues to consider include

  • Closed environment versus open environment

  • X.509 versus alternative certificate formats

  • Targeted applications versus comprehensive solutions
