Chapter 16. Major Standards Activities

This chapter discusses a number of the high-visibility standards activities relevant to PKI concepts or techniques. It is not meant to be exhaustive, but it does include many of the groups that have captured significant attention in recent times as awareness of security (and especially PKI) has grown.

The groups listed here are interrelated to various degrees. Those defining certificate formats include X.509, SPKI, OpenPGP, and EDIFACT; these, to a large extent, are independent efforts. Those profiling certificates (primarily X.509v3 certificates) for specific environments and uses include PKIX, TC68, S/MIME, IPsec, and TLS; these efforts overlap to a much greater degree.
