Standard Versus Proprietary Solutions

A solution is said to be based on standards when it is based on industry accepted standards, and there are no unique implementation details that would pose a threat to interoperability with another technology vendor that is also based on the same standards. A solution is said to be proprietary when it is based on unique implementation details that will, by definition, prevent interoperability with other technology vendors.

Given the current interest in and the level of activity with respect to standards and multi-vendor cooperation, it is difficult to see a business case for adopting proprietary solutions. However, there still may be a small number of environments where this may be the best choice. Again, ...
