Chapter 5. Storage management 261
򐂰 Documentation:
The source code for the API header files that the application needs
The source code for a sample application and the makefile to build it
The API code is packaged with the backup-archive client code. Applications that
have been written using a particular version of the API may not work with later
API versions. It is important to find out which API version is supported and tested
for a particular application. It is possible to use an earlier version API
concurrently with a later version backup-archive client if this is required for
support of a particular API application.
5.4.2 IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases
IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases can help you protect a wide range of
applications and databases by letting you preserve data wherever it is and
however it is stored in those applications and databases. With Tivoli Storage
Manager for Databases, you can further extend the automated power of Tivoli
Storage Manager by exploiting the backup certified utilities and interfaces
provided by a variety of vendors. It can help you manage the costs associated
with distributed storage management by leveraging storage resources and
automating management tasks while providing data protection for the Oracle,
IBM Informix® and Microsoft SQL Server databases. The Tivoli Storage
Manager for Databases functionality is included in the IBM DB2 Universal
Database™ package and does not need to be purchased separately. For SAP
R/3 and mySAP.com systems with their underlying databases, IBM Tivoli
software offers a specialized product called IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for
Enterprise Resource Planning.
The ability to achieve a point-in-time restore of your e-business environment is
critical. IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases uses only backup-certified
utilities and interfaces provided by the database vendors (Microsoft SQL Server,
Oracle, and Informix).
Data Protection for IBM DB2 Universal Database
The Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases functionality is included in the IBM
DB2 Universal Database package and does not need to be purchased
separately.
As shown in Figure 5-19 on page 262, the DB2 backup utilities (but not
export/import) are fully integrated with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager services
because the DB2 utilities use the Tivoli Storage Manager API. This means that
an intermediate file is not created during the backup operation before storing the
database image on one or more Tivoli Storage Manager servers. Both online and

offline backups can be performed with Tivoli Storage Manager, and DB2 data is
automatically restored by using the DB2 restore utility.
Tivoli Storage Manager can also archive DB2 log files. DB2 provides a user exit
program for backing up and restoring its log files directly to Tivoli Storage
Manager. Log files are moved to the DB2 user exit program when they become
inactive. The logs are also automatically retrieved from Tivoli Storage Manager
for roll-forward recovery.

Data Protection for Microsoft SQL Server
Data Protection for SQL allows you to perform online backups and restores of
Microsoft SQL Server databases to Tivoli Storage Manager Server storage using
either command-line or graphical user interfaces (GUI) on Windows NT,
Windows 2000, and Windows 2003. This chapter provides the following
