Recreating LVM structures and restoring data
SysBack provides the ability to do the following operations:
򐂰 Restore data only
򐂰 Recreate LVM structures only
򐂰 Recreate LVM structures and restore data all in the same process
You can restore and recreate either an entire backup image, or any subset of
data on a backup. For example, considering a volume group backup, you can:
򐂰 Restore the entire volume group and data
򐂰 Recreate only the volume group LVM structures
򐂰 Restore one or more individual file systems
򐂰 Recreate only the LVM structure of one or more file systems
򐂰 Restore one or more individual logical volumes
򐂰 Recreate only the LVM structure of one or more logical volumes
򐂰 Restore individual files or directories
5.4.9 Cristie Bare Machine Recovery
Cristie Bare Machine Recovery (CBMR) is a software package that works in
conjunction with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager to provide a fully automated
method of recovering a Windows, Linux, and Sun Solaris operating system to a
new hard disk drive or RAID system. There are three components to the
software: the backup of the operating system, the configuration files, and the
boot files.

Chapter 5. Storage management 293
The backup of the operating system comprises the files contained in the
Windows operating system folder together with the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager
client files and the CBMR files. These are backed up as a few files to the IBM
Tivoli Storage Manager file space and kept up to date either on an ad hoc basis
or by using the scheduler incorporated within CBMR.
The configuration files contain key static information about the hard disk drive,
boot sectors, and partitions, and this is stored on a network share and/or on a
floppy disk (one for each computer).
The boot and system files are contained on the supplied bootable CD-ROM or
can be created on two floppies by running a utility in CBMR.
A machine recovery is performed by booting from the supplied CD-ROM or
created floppy disk, and running the CBMR recovery program. This program
loads a Linux shell operating system, the drivers required to access the network,
and the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager client. The Windows operating system is
then recovered from the files stored on the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager server to
the most recent point-in-time backup, and the system is rebooted in Windows
mode. The rest of the data files can then be restored from the IBM Tivoli Storage
Manager client.
Overview
Cristie Bare Machine Recovery (CBMR) backup and disaster recovery software
readily integrates with the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager to provide bare Machine
Recovery capability to an IBM Tivoli Storage Manager client computer (see
Figure 5-33 on page 294).

CMBR consists of several components that are included within the package, and
it has a single installation process. These components do not have to be
purchased separately. CBMR consists of the following components:
1. Backup and restore software
Cristie’s backup and restore software (PC-BaX) is trusted and used in
thousands of servers worldwide. This is used to back up and restore files in
Windows mode.
2. Open File Module (OFM)
OFM enables backup of files that are in use by other applications at the time
of backup.
3. Customized version of Linux operating system
A failed computer needs to be booted from the CBMR CD-ROM or floppies
created from the CD-ROM with the supplied tools. This boots a version of
Linux in which the partitioning and formatting of the hard disks will be done.
4. Linux mode restore software
Restores the essential operating system files from the IBM Tivoli Storage
Manager server.
It is possible to replace the original hard disk with a larger or smaller one, and
CBMR automatically scales the partitions to fit in the new hard disk. In doing so
