VR: The Medium

Virtual reality is a medium. Therefore, we can begin to understand the potential of VR in the communication and exploration of ideas by examining how it relates to other media of human communication.

The focus of this chapter is on both the nature of communications media and the role of virtual reality within the larger whole. This is an important topic for the development of effective VR experiences. It isn’t sufficient to understand only the technology of the medium if you will be architecting any portion of the experience. (In Part II, we proceed with how VR technology and interface designs are fashioned into a workable system.)
