Biology of Fear and Unfear

On a calm, beautiful late summer night in Annapolis, Maryland, I (Mark) carefully parallel parked my Toyota Tacoma on a one-way street. Originally designed for horse traffic in the 1600s, the streets of historic downtown Annapolis are charming but narrow. I checked my side view mirror to make sure that the coast was clear. I stepped onto the street, shutting and locking the door behind me.

Just then, bright headlights and a revving engine flooded my senses. A burst of energy shot through me, and I dived headfirst into the bed of my truck, anticipating an impact. SMASH! Something crashed against my lower leg, glass shattered, and metal crunched.

A vehicle roared past. Moments later, a police car followed, lights ...
