Lightness is one of the three main attributes of color and describes the extent to which an object or light source appears to reflect or emit more or less light

Lightness, also known as value, is a relative perception. Chromatically neutral objects that appear to emit a lot of light compared with other objects will likely appear white, and those that appear to emit little light compared with other objects will likely appear black.
