I grew up in Seattle and graduated from college at the height of the Boeing layoffs. Unemployment exceeded 10%, and in 1971, when the slump was at its worst, someone put up a billboard near the airport that read, “Will the last person leaving Seattle please turn out the lights?”* My dad was a dedicated Boeing employee, and during that time, he thought that each week would be his last in a profession he loved: designing, as he was fond of calling them, “flying machines.” He survived the cutbacks, but no one in our family ever breathed easily about job security again.
