Introduction
This design problem is a follow-on from Design Problem 2, in which a British Waterways team were involved in designing a new jack mechanism to open a canal bridge. The jack force of 28729 N determined in Design Problem 2 will be used to validate the structural integrity of the new structure, which is to be incorporated into the existing structure beneath the bridge.
