Boot Sectors

To manage a disk and enable all applications to see a consistent interface to the file system no matter what type of storage hardware is being used, the operating system creates several structures on the disk. The most important of these are the boot sectors (also called boot records). There two main types of boot sectors are called master boot records (MBRs) and volume boot records (VBRs).

Only one MBR exists on a physical disk, and it is always found at the beginning of the disk. A single disk can contain multiple partitions (also called volumes), and a VBR can be found at the start of each volume.
