19.1Introduction

A vehicle which is able to drive on a road must have adequate surface friction in the contact area between the tires and the road surface, so that loss of driving control does not occur in situations normally expected to be safe and comfortable (Anderson and Henry 1979; Heaton et al. 1990; Liu et al. 2003a, 2003b).
