Use Tableau Parameters to Change Measures or Dimensions Dynamically
Your organization has questions about its data, and it looks to you to answer those questions. Oftentimes, however, the subject matter that you are reporting on gets overwhelming very quickly. If you look at HR, for example, your organization may want to see information regarding sex, race, years of service, and many other demographics about its workforce. To cover each of these demographics, you would have to create a separate chart, quickly filling your available dashboard space.
To make matters worse, the scope of the questions often grows to unmanageable levels. What would you do if your organization wanted to see combinations of all those demographics, such as sex and race, together? Would you make a separate chart for each combination? How many dashboard tabs would it take to cover all the possible permutations?
Fortunately, Tableau has parameters. Partnered with a simple calculation, parameters give you the power to combine multiple charts into one. The setup only takes a few steps, but in the end, you will have multiple charts possible all on one axis and entirely controlled by a parameter interaction. Better still, multiple parameters can be combined to create the differing permutations your organization has questions about.
