This chapter focuses on two essential concepts behind the creation and manipulation of images in general: file formats and image resolution.
Every file you use when you do work on a computer has a format. For instance, Word documents have a .doc or .docx format. Excel spreadsheet documents usually have an .xls file format. How a file is formatted determines the general characteristics and capacities of the file, as well as what applications can be used to open, read, and modify the file. Image files can be created and saved in a number of different formats and, depending on the format type, the characteristics of the image can be very different.
