Differential equations are ubiquitous in science and engineering, since they describe the rate of change of a system with time, position, or some other independent variable. It is conventional to classify differential equations according to certain characteristics.
Ordinary differential equations (ODEs) depend on a single independent variable, such as time; while partial differential equations (PDEs) depend on several independent variables, such as spatial coordinates as well as, perhaps, time. In this chapter we treat ODEs; PDEs are the subject of the next chapter.
