High Reliability

Even when we think we have done the 3Ms well, there may still be difficulty. The third M is Make it easier, not easy. We can’t always make doing the right thing and change easy.

This is a story of a change that seemed easy to me. However, it wasn’t so easy for a plant engineer despite being in a High Reliability Organization (HRO). The plant was one of many in SKF.1 SKF is based in Sweden with locations around the world. SKF services healthcare, aerospace, aviation, automotive, industrial, mining, and countless other smaller companies specializing in reliable products. SKF is referenced in textbooks on reliability engineering because of its pioneering work in design and performance reliability.
