Design Is Redesign

I have mentioned a few times already that you should make a design, measure it, learn something, and then use that new information to design it again. When you design the same thing again and again, improving it each time, that is called an iterative process. You are iterating on your design until it gets really good.

That is the only way to be a good designer.

Some people think that means you have to use an agile process, but they are not the same. A good design process doesn’t need to follow any particular project management method, but you must revisit your designs over time.

Even more than that, if your design will be used in more than one context, such as desktop and mobile devices, you should actually have more than one version of your design working at the same time!

Reasons to Design More Than One Version of the Same Thing

There are a million little reasons to design versions of something in real life, but a few of those reasons happen more often:

  • Different devices: Different screen sizes or input methods (tap, click, etc.) are the most common reasons to design more versions of something. A big layout for a laptop with a cursor just doesn’t work well on a small phone screen with a finger. Not to mention tablets, televisions, AR, VR, etc.
