Chapter 10. Time synchronization scenario
Many applications rely heavily on the accuracy of the timestamps contained in the data. A
good example of a time dependent application would be Kerberos. During the exchange of
authentication data, Kerberos requires that the difference between the timestamps contained
in the datagram and the time on the server fall within a specifically defined amount of time. If
the timestamps do not fulfill that requirement the authentication fails.
Time values can be supplied to applications using APIs that access the software clock on the
iSeries. As you will see in the following scenario we are able to adjust both the software and
system clocks using SNTP, Management Central, or a combination of both. This chapter
contains a scenario that demonstrates time synchronization of multiple iSeries in a network.
