1. POPULAR MOVEMENTS

In times of economic difficulty or social concern, nationalism, populism and extremism emerge with force. It is not surprising: in the face of the tension in society, these movements seem to offer a way out. Radical movements, in which complaint, anger and the desire to take drastic action abound, are understandable movements when the system is unable to regenerate itself.

The regeneration spoken of by those who are part of the system no longer deserves such a name. It is demagogy. The problems that the rulers of a State should solve, and do not solve, turn the State into part of the problem. ...
