6.1 Introduction
This chapter is about state constrained optimal control problems and provides a novel approach to the study of optimality conditions and viability through nonsmooth analysis and exact penalization. In this chapter, we focus on problems for which the state evolves in ℝn, leaving a possible extension to those for which the state evolves on a smooth manifold M for future work.
