This chapter consists of two main parts. This first part provides an overview of international differences in the institutional and legal settings in different countries around the world from which data are considered in this book. This material provides a basis for understanding potential sources for differences in venture capital and private equity markets across countries. International differences across countries are quantified with the use of indices to reflect differences in legal standards, which enables empirical comparisons of venture capital and private equity markets across countries in subsequent chapters.
