Abstract: In this chapter, we address verbal communication in non-cooperative contexts, especially deceptive, ideological and fallacious communication. We first review the main traditions that have studied this issue: ancient Rhetoric, contemporary Argumentation Theory, Communication Science, Critical Discourse Analysis, and Pragmatics, from Grice to Cognitive linguistics. We dedicate particular attention to contemporary post-Gricean Pragmatics and to its links with research in Psychology on cognitive heuristics.
