TOWARDS COLLECTIVE WRITING

The interrelationship between the operator, the video apparatus, ar.d the subjects treated is such that it is appropriate to start by presenting the participant-observer who is himself the operator. As will appear, the sociological approach we advocate rejects the idea that observers – whoever they may be, including ourselves – can be placed in parentheses. The first steps working with video are marked by the progressive and rather painful discovery of a contradiction: video is a language while not yet being one. We shall frequently have occasion to explore this paradox already signalled in these first chapters.
