Chapter 10. The Answer’s in Our Own Backyard

Of all the deep cultural and historical veins that run below steampunk, making and hacking have been around long before any of the subcultures came to be. Before there were “makers” there were teenagers who took a torch to dad’s old Plymouth, transforming it into a magnificent hot rod. Before there were steampunks there were passionate and playful historical revisionists. And before we had hackers there were millennia of folks who just plain needed to get things done. Maybe they didn’t have exactly what they needed, so they pulled a little from here and scavenged a little from there, but in the end with ingenuity and a little humor they made it work.
