This chapter provides a cursory overview of basic concepts fundamental to the establishment of a modern computer-based instrumentation laboratory or clinical workstation. Many issues associated with analog data collection are mentioned. Data collection via computer serial ports from existing medical devices is also discussed. Additionally, brief introductions to LabVIEW™ and BioBench™ are provided as a starting point for those unfamiliar with the software packages.
