Several of these terms have broader meanings outside the massively ­multiplayer online game industry.

additive manufacture: creation of physical products through progressive application of materials, as, for example, in 3-D printing

avatar: a computer-simulated person that directly represents the user

beta: originally a test version of a computer game through which volunteer players could help designers complete development of the game, but in recent years unfinished games have been more widely distributed, even requiring payment from players

buff: a temporary change to a variable in the algorithm defining a characteristic relevant to the performance of an avatar, such as a food or magic spell that increases the avatar’s strength
