In the virtual classroom, you are on stage. Your physical appearance is a key element to making a great impression, along with projecting credibility and competence.

A recent study from Princeton University concludes that people judge your competence based on what you wear and how you look. People who are well-groomed are deemed more competent.1 “These judgments are made in a matter of milliseconds and are very hard to avoid.”2 Therefore, you need to look your best. Always on. Always video ready.

Grooming

On video, good grooming is essential. The camera is unforgiving, and poor grooming sticks out like a sore thumb. Your hair, face, teeth, and makeup are being scrutinized by stakeholders, and you are being judged based on what they see. And once someone makes that split-second decision, the negativity bias is hard to overcome.

For women and men with long hair, style it back away from your face. This will prevent it from casting unflattering shadows and keep you from touching and fidgeting with it. No matter what length your hair is, make sure it is styled and neat. A little hair gel or paste can go a long way toward making you look phenomenal.
