Let’s examine availability in a virtual environment. There are three layers to consider: a single virtual machine, a host or groups of hosts, and the entire datacenter. In addition to the virtual machines, and their hosts, there is also the additional infrastructure such as the network and storage systems, not to mention the environmental factors like electrical power and air conditioning. All of the aforementioned areas have their own methods to improve availability, and they will not be covered here except in a virtualization context.
