Active Directory Backup and Recovery

You should always endeavor to perform server and system-state backups on a daily basis. If you cannot perform backups with this regularity, you should perform at least a weekly backup of the server and system-state data for your Active Directory domain controllers.

We recommend that you never restore system-state data older than 60 days because this is coming pretty close to the 60 day default tombstone expiration date for Active Directory objects within the forest. Your domain controller’s system-state backup should consist of the SysVol information, boot and system files, the registry, and the Active Directory service.
