1 Introduction – WorldCultural Heritage Sites
The World Heritage List designates unique cultural sites of outstanding universal value, values measurable in both cultural and economic terms. At the latest update (December 1996) there were 506 properties inscribed on the List, 380 cultural, 107 natural and nineteen mixed. Ten World Heritage Sites are discussed in detail in this book, examples chosen to illustrate the range of different properties which have received World Heritage designation, from all over the world. No two World Heritage Sites are (by definition) alike but all share common problems such as the need for a delicate balance between visitation and conservation.
