Art has never sprung, fully formed, out of nowhere. Every artist needs visual, intellectual and emotional stimulation, and every artist grows up with an awareness of all that has gone before. It is probably true that there is nothing new to be said, but each artist will bring their own unique outlook and experience to their work, making it completely their own. This chapter is about some of the many artists who have helped to shape my own outlook and process, who I hope will also inspire you.
