A business enterprise, organization, or government entity has essential data that includes variables that are dates, times, or datetimes, also known as time series data , trend data , or temporal data .

William Playfair invented the time series plot (and the pie chart). His first 43 time series plots were in the book The Commercial and Political Atlas, which was published in London in 1786.
