Books are often inspired by chance meetings, ad hoc conversations and events. The belief that public relations and strategic communications scholarship and practice needed to be explored ‘beyond text’ prompted us to host a conference in London in 2014. We were surprised and delighted by the response it received and so it was that this book was conceived as a result.

Our thanks go to all those fellow travellers who have contributed to the various chapters and we hope you will be as stimulated and challenged as we have been by the variety of subjects covered. Our aim is that this book will start a much-needed debate about the role of visual and spatial forms of communication in public relations scholarship and practice.
