Vine was launched in late January of 2013 as a microvideo sharing site from Twitter. Vine, a mobile application, allows users to share short videos (a maximum of 6 seconds) from their mobile devices. In this sense, it's similar to the video version of Twitter, where users share short-format content. When Twitter was launched, it seemed impossible to communicate anything in 140 or fewer characters, yet it's now the norm for many people. Twitter is hoping that Vine will have the same impact, by making 6-second videos the new standard of efficient video communication.

Since Vine was launched, a number of other short-format video formats have emerged. Instagram launched Instagram Video, allowing users to record, edit, and share 15-second videos (as covered in Chapter 11).
